Kangri Cancer cases raising, it is a clay pot filled with burning coals in a wicker basket, are an affordable way to keep warm during the harsh Kashmir winters.
Kangri Cancer cases are increasing in Kashmir, the combination of a long peran, traditional Kashmir clothing and kangri is the most helpful and reliable way to protect from the cold for the poor and marginalized in the remote rural areas of Kashmir where electricity is still a luxury.
However, there have been many cases of Cancer, a type of squamous cell carcinoma, reported in the valley over the past few years. Medical experts say that the overuse of Kangri pot is a major cause of this type of cancer.
According to a recent study, Kangri cancer patients used Kangri for 1 year and 3-4 months, 5 to 6 hours a day. Factors thought to contribute to the growth of this cancer are heat, burning wood particles, smoke, leaf and burnt chinar leaves.

Dr Associate Professor and Consultant in the Department of Radiation Oncology at the Sher-I-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences Institute of Cancer in Srinagar. Shaqul Qamar Wani told 101Reporters: “Kangri cancer is a type of other skin cancer and it mainly occurs in the lower body (lower abdomen and inner thighs) because of the frequent placement of kangri near this area to maintain body temperature in the cold winter.” Because kangri is produced and used in Kashmir, this rock is a part of the Indian subcontinent. It is only found locally.
It is a disturbing circumstance for Kashmir and people over there here’s know why:–
Concerned about the increasing number of Kangri cancer patients in the region, she said, “In the past five years, our hospital has enrolled more than 400 skin cancer patients, including those with Kangri cancer. The educated population is familiar with this disease. However, awareness-raising programs for the socially vulnerable who live in remote areas should be implemented from time to time,” she said.
Because Kangri is produced and used in Kashmir, this cancer is only found in that region of the Indian subcontinent. Over time, thermal damage to the skin takes the form of superficial dark brown reticulated lesions called “embryonic erythema” or fiery spots, which in themselves are precancerous conditions. If left untreated, these lesions can take the form of single or multiple well-defined lesions that continue to grow and can be associated with itching, macules, and non-healing ulcers.”
Preventions the one must know:-
Dr. Shaqul said early detection of this cancer is the key to treatment. If the disease is localized, simple surgical procedures are effective. When it spreads to the local drainage node, surgical intervention is possible and irradiation of the problem area is possible. All funds needed to treat such patients are already available in the Valley.
An article published by one of the doctors, Mohmad Ashraf Teli, Radiation Therapy and Plastics and Reconstructive Surgery, SKIMS, Soura, Srinagar Kashmir, showed that surgery is the most common treatment in the treatment of these tumors.
Medical specialists also think that education and awareness-raising about this type of cancer in the local Kashmiri community can help reduce the incidence.
“Regular medical screening with blood tests, scans and physical examinations are important because of the high probability of metastasis and the possibility of recurrence. An alternative to keep us warm during the winter. Finding a way can completely prevent from this cancer.
My sincere request to the community is to start and implement healthy measures today to make tomorrow better and happier. It doesn’t matter how financially we are. There is always a loophole. Replacing the use of kangri at once can be difficult, but it will become possible over time. Until then, use it wisely and avoid touching your skin as much as possible,” Dr Shaqul said.
