Kerala Congress said in a series of tweets that the BJP supported the VP Singh government despite the flight of Kashmiri Pandits from the Valley during his time.
New Delhi: The Congress Party blamed the exodus of Kashmir Pandits from the valley to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). In a series of tweets, the Kerala Congress claimed that the BJP supported Vice President Singh’s government until 1989, despite the migration of Kashmiri Pandits under his rule.
The party also claimed that “the BJP’s own governor, Jagmohan”, had asked the Kashmiri pundits to relocate to Jammu. “The BJP-backed government of VP Singh came to power in December 1989. Migration of Pandits started the very next month, January 1990.
The BJP did nothing and continued to support VP Singh till Nov 1990,” Kerala Congress said in a tweet. Highlighting the series of initiatives taken by the Congress for the Pandits of Kashmir during his reign, the Kerala Congress said that the UPA government was constructing 5,242 residential buildings for the Pandits in Jammu and providing one-time aid to each family in addition to scholarships and support Rs 5 lakh grants to farmers and social welfare schemes valued at Rs 1,168.4 crore.
Congress’s version of history is ‘twisted’: KJ Alphons The BJP hit back at Congress, saying Congress’s version of history is ‘twisted’. BJP MP KJ Alphons said it was Congress and its allies who created the situation where Kashmiri pundits could no longer live in the valley. Attacks on Pandits began in September 1989; They started leaving Kashmir in November-December. Those who stayed left in January 1990, …
“They were murdered, there was a genuine fear for their lives, so they left…things have improved dramatically after the revocation of Article 370,” he further added.
Alphons said that over 1.5 lakh Kashmiri Pandits were driven out on communal grounds, by the ruling dispensation, which was Congress or its supported governments. Shortly later, Senior government advisor Kanchan Gupta tweeted former PM Manmohan Singh’s picture with separatist leader Yasin Malik to show that the Congress government was in touch with those fighting an armed protest demanding separate Kashmir.
“Here is what #UPA did: Hugged and kissed terrorist Yasin Malik whose hands are stained with the blood of Indians, including IAF personnel. @INCIndia protesteth too much. It should instead opt for silence to hide its guilt and shame (sic),” Gupta said.
“Kashmiri Pandit community was made to leave their homes in the most painful condition. History witness to the fact that all this was a cumulative outcome of a series of Congress blunders beginning from what’s now recorded as infamous Nehruvian blunders,” said Union Minister Dr Jitendra Singh.
