VD Savarkar was an advocate for Indian liberation in a number of ways. He is regarded as one of the foremost pioneers of nationalist Hindu political ideology. Through his contact with the rebel group India House, he was arrested in 1910 and imprisoned in a Cellular prison on the Andaman & Nicobar Islands. He was later transferred to Ratnagiri, where he was granted limited freedom.
A separatist, Savarkar is widely regarded as a freedom fighter, but is widely criticized for his public views, as well as for the fact that he wrote appeals for mercy to British authorities in prison. Savarkar was re-arrested in connection with the murder of Mahatma Gandhi but was later released after no evidence was found against him .
