Sri Lanka’s: main opposition party Samagi Jana Balwegaya (SJB) announced that it will move a no confidence motion against President Gotabaya’s Rajapaksa’s government if it fails to provide immediate relief to the people of the island nation adversely affected by the economic crisis .
Sri Lankan citizens continue to protest against the current government and have demanded the removal of the President and Prime Minister.
We have decided to bring a motion of no confidence in Sri Lankan president Gotabaya Rajapaksa as he fails to speak to the country about economic policies. We have convened a meeting with all opposition leaders and will take a final decision soon, “Sri Lankan opposition leader Sajith Premadasa told ANI.
In addition, he said opposition members of Parliament had also discussed the need for an end to the Office of the President and that power should be divided in Sri Lanka between the Executive, the Legislature, and the Judiciary.
Earlier, opposition leader Sajith Premadasa had said Sri Lanka should end a powerful Presidential Office and strengthen Parliament without paving the way for a dictatorial Prime Minister while ensuring adequate checks and balance.
For almost 20 years every leader has promised to overthrow the Presidency but he has strengthened it, ”Premasa said in a heated parliamentary speech on Tuesday reminding Parliament of the need to introduce a new electoral system.
It is worth noting that since the introduction of the presidential system in 1978, every election that has been held has been contested with the promise of a term of office. However, once elected, all the presidents chose to ignore the election promise.
Meanwhile, Sri Lankan citizens continue to protest against the current government and have demanded the removal of the President and Prime Minister.
Sri Lanka is facing a severe economic crisis with a shortage of food and fuel that affects a large number of the island’s population. The economy has been weakening since the COVID-19 epidemic began.
Sri Lanka is also facing a crisis of foreign exchange, which has disrupted its purchasing power for food and fuel, which has led to power outages in the country. Lack of essential goods forced Sri Lanka to seek help from friendly countries.
The announcement by a popular Buddhist monk that the Mahanayaka people have also asked the government to abolish further pressure. Clergymen, an important promoter of public opinion, have been supporting the Rajapaksas and if the monastic statement is accurate, it could encourage more people to join the protests. The political climate of the anti-government movement by the participation of all sectors of society, especially the educated youth and workers, has made it very difficult for the government to deal with this situation.
Such widespread social upheaval has never occurred in Sri Lanka and its consequences are unpredictable if power, fuel and financial problems are not addressed soon.
Which created chaos as opposition groups continued to shoot at the president, unwilling to step in and replace Rajapaksas to save the community from economic hardship.
In a latest development, the Asian development Bank has projected Sri Lanka ’s economic growth to dip to 2.4% in 2022 and marginally improve to 2.5% in next year . To overcome the economic crises , Rajapaksa has appointed a team of economic and fiscal experts as members of the presidential advisory group on Multilateral engagement and debt sustainability to prepare a road map to address the debt crises . He also refused to accept the resignation of the Deputy speaker and requested him to continue .
