Spicejet aircraft en route from Mumbai to Durgapur on Sunday, encountered severe turbulence.
At least 40 people were injured aboard the SpiceJet aircraft from Mumbai to Durgapur, West Bengal, 12 of whom were seriously injured after the airline’s Boeing 737-800 encountered severe turbulence while descending. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation Administration (DGCA), India’s aviation security regulator, has dispatched an interdisciplinary team to conduct a regulatory investigation into the incident.
On Sunday night, the SpiceJet aircraft experienced heavy air currents during its descent, causing carry-on baggage to fall on passengers’ heads. A video taken by a passenger and posted to Twitter demonstrates the creepy experience.
A SpiceJet aircraft, SG945, attempted to land at Kazi Nazrul Islamic Airport in Durgapur, West Bengal when it encountered a storm known as Kalbaisakhi. Oxygen masks fell off, and luggage fell from the overhead hold onto passengers, injuring several people.
Nevertheless, the plane landed safely at Durgapur Airport in West Bengal and the injured were directly taken to the hospital for medication.
DGCA said three cabin crew members and some of the passengers suffered head injuries and stitches, while one passenger suffered spinal injuries in the accident.
