After Russia announced a temporary ceasefire from 10 a.m. on Tuesday, India began evacuating its stranded citizens from Ukraine’s Sumy to Poltava under ‘Operation Ganga’ (Moscow time). The ceasefire was implemented in order to build humanitarian corridors in Kyiv, Chernihiv, Sumy, Kharkiv, and Mariupol.
An Indian convoy of 12 buses left Sumy, according to Puneet Singh Chandhok, head of the Indian World Forum, and all Indians in the city were evacuated. Officials from the Indian Embassy and the Red Cross escorted the Indian caravan.
Nine Bangladeshis were also evacuated from Ukraine as part of the convoy. It also attracted students from Nepal and Tunisia.
“I verified with the control room, 694 Indian students remain stranded in Sumy,” Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri stated on Tuesday. They’ve all boarded buses to Poltava today.”
