During the virtual summit, the Prime Minister Modi said recent developments in Europe have raised questions about the ‘stability of order international”.
Amid the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine, Prime Minister Narendra Modi attended the 5th BIMSTEC Summit on Wednesday March 30, 2022 and said recent developments in Europe “raise questions about the stability of order international “.
Seeking regional cooperation at the virtual summit hosted by Sri Lanka, the current BIMSTEC Chairman, Prime Minister Modi, said it was time to make the Bay of Bengal the bridge of connectivity, prosperity and security.
“Recent developments in Europe have raised questions about the stability of the international order. In this context, regional cooperation has become a priority. Today, we are adopting the BIMSTEC charter to develop an institutional architecture for our group,” he said.
“I call on all BIMSTEC nations to work with renewed enthusiasm to achieve the goals we achieved together in 1997,” Prime Minister Modi added.
“As our region faces health and economic security challenges, unity and cooperation are the order of the day,” Prime Minister Modi stressed.
He also said that India will provide $1 million to the BIMSTEC Secretariat to increase its operating budget.
“It is important to build the capacity of the secretariat (BIMSTEC)…I propose that the Secretary-General establish a roadmap for this,” said the Indian Prime Minister.

This sub-regional organization was established by the Bangkok Declaration of June 6, 1997. First, the economic bloc of four member states was formed under the acronym “BIST-EC” (Bangladesh, India, Sri Lanka and Thailand Economic Cooperation ). . After Myanmar joined on December 22, 1997, the group was renamed “BIMST-EC” (Bangladesh, India, Myanmar, Sri Lanka and Thailand Economic Cooperation) at a special ministerial meeting in Bangkok.
With the admission of Nepal and Bhutan at the 6th Ministerial Meeting in February 2004, Thailand’s name was changed to “Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC)”.
