Pride Month 2022: Every June, Pride Month celebrates the LGBTQ community and is an opportunity to peacefully show and raise public and political awareness of the community and the problems it faces. Millions of people from all over the world gather each year to celebrate Pride Month. The one-month celebration is characterized by multiple events and reunions around the world. The term “pride” can be traced back to 1966 when a group of Californian people took the lead in fighting for the equality of LGBTQ people. The acronym “Pride” for “Individual Rights in Defence and Education” was the name of this group.
To commemorate the month, pride parades, marches, parties, concerts, workshops and conferences are held with the participation of the LGBTQ community around the world. Members of the LGBTQ community who died as a result of hate crimes and HIV / AIDS will also be commemorated throughout the month.
On September 6, 2018, the LGBT community in India won a big battle when the Supreme Court unanimously ruled that Article 377 was unconstitutional. Pride Month begins on June 1st and ends on June 30th.
According to the BBC, only 28 countries in the world allow same-sex marriage, and 69 have enacted laws that criminalize homosexuality.
HISTORY OF PRIDE MONTH:
In 1924, human rights activist Henry Gerber founded the Human Rights Association in the United States. It became the first gay rights organization in the United States. The organization aimed to break the stereotypes and taboos about homosexuality. Henry Gerber was also arrested several times for his work. Then in 1969, a gay bar called the Stonewall Inn in New York City was attacked by police who claimed that the bar was selling alcohol without a license. Police pushed their guests into police vans, which infuriated the crowd and forced police to barricade themselves for protection. The incident, known as the Stonewall Rebellion, attracted a lot of media coverage and revealed the problems facing the LGBT community. In 1970, demonstrations supporting the gay community were held in New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, and San Francisco.
In 1978, the pride flag was created by Gilbert Baker, an openly gay and drag queen artist. It was commissioned by Harvey Milk, the country’s first elected openly gay official. The rainbow stripes on the flag represent the diverse sexuality of the LGBT community. Also, the colour of the flag has a different meaning. Red is good, pink is sex, orange is healing, yellow is sunlight, green is nature, turquoise is art, indigo is harmony, and violet is spirit.
Brenda Howard, also known as the mother of pride, coordinated the first LGBT Pride March. This led to the beginning of many events organized around Pride Day. The event has since grown into an annual LGBT celebration held in June each year.
Places In India to Visit during the Pride Month:
Mumbai offers some of the best nightlife in the country. Top pubs and clubs include BlueFROG, Hard Rock Cafe, Toto’s and He Said She Said. Mumbai is a city that is very welcoming to the LGBT community. An example of urban unification is the Mumbai Queer Film Festival. Audiences and filmmakers come together to contribute to social change through gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and queer film presentations. Each year, the city hosts a pride march, also known as the Queer Other Di March.
Thanks to the development of IT, Bangalore has tolerance for the LGBT population not found in other big cities in India. The LGBT-friendly work environment makes this city a safe haven for anyone seeking help or friendship. The first march of Lesbian Dykes on Bike took place at Bangalore Pride 2013. The Bangalore Queer Film Festival is an annual film festival held in the city. It was founded in 2008 to provide film memorials to LGBTI and other Indian sexual and sexual minorities.
Known as Pink City, Jaipur is one of India’s most imperial, beautiful and colourful cities with a rich history and diverse culture. Regarding LGBTQ rights, Jaipur is slowly but steadily asserting himself. The city’s first pride parade took place on March 1, this year.
The Chennai International Queer Film Festival (also known as Reel Desire) began in 2004 and features panel discussions on LGBTQI’s inclusiveness, interaction with filmmakers, photography/art exhibitions and other performances. Tamil Nadu is India’s first state to recognize the rights of transgender people. Every June, Chennai holds an annual pride parade under the umbrella of The Tamil Nadu Collation.
