Power subsidy in Delhi, the Delhi Cabinet decided on Thursday that handouts will only be given out to consumers who choose from October 1st. Arvind Kejriwal, said many consumers are willing to forgo subsidies to help the government.
Power Subsidy in Delhi, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said on Thursday that from 1 October, the Delhi government will provide electricity subsidies to consumers who choose the scheme. Consumers in Delhi currently receive a “zero” electricity rate for up to 200 units of electricity and a subsidy of Rs 800 if they consume between 201 and 400 units of electricity per month.
Currently, electricity in Delhi is free for up to 200 units, and a 50% subsidy is provided for up to 400 units per month.
Kejriwal AAP Government has allocated ₹3,340 crores to the energy sector for the fiscal year 2022-23 under a special electricity subsidy scheme.
At a press conference yesterday, he said, “Affordable electricity in Delhi will now be an option. This means that if energy consumers want electricity subsidized, they will now get free or subsidized electricity.”
“But if someone thinks they can, then they can tell the Delhi government that they don’t need electricity subsidies and can use electricity regularly. We’re going to start working on asking people about this soon. Electricity subsidy will be available to those who request it from October 1st,” said Delhi CM.
Delhi is also facing a coal supply shortage, forcing the state to issue an alarm about the power supply to the capital. Delhi Energy Minister Satyendar Jain recently wrote to Union Energy Minister R.K. Singh detailed the low coal supply of several thermal power plants supplying electricity to the capital and urged the centre to ensure sufficient coal availability for uninterruped power supply to Delhi.
A cabinet meeting that made the electricity subsidy plan optional also approved the continuation of the plan as an annual procedural requirement following the release of funds from the state budget for this fiscal year.
AAP’s main voting point, which Kejriwal protects since its first parliamentary elections in 2013, has been to provide free, subsidized electricity and water. Since then, the party, together with Kejriwal, has always promised two subsidy schemes in every election. Claims that funds raised during the campaign come from the administration’s fight to fight corruption.
