Quinton de Kock played a brilliant 80 as Lucknow Super Giants beat Delhi Capitals by 6 wickets to continue their winning streak in IPL 2022.
The match ended in the final and under pressure Lucknow finally got the job done as youngster Ayush Badoni hit the crucial four and a six against Shardul Thakur in the final. (IPL 2022)
De Kock was at his destructive best as he shared a 73-point streak with opening partner Rahul (24 of 25).
The South African striker-wicketkeeper was particularly tough on compatriot Anrich Nortje, who was playing his first match since November. The in-form Pacer, playing his first IPL 2022 game in India, was crushed by de Kock in over 19 points for three fours and a six.
In a memorable night for Nortje, the South African then had to be taken off the tackle after throwing two balls with no ball in the waist.
After Rahul fell, his team needed 76 from the last 10 overs. De Kock, who had nine fours and two sixes, put the team on the verge of victory with his second 50+ point result of the tournament.
With the ground hard to beat, Lucknow struggled to finish the game as even in-form Deepak Hooda and veteran Krunal Pandya failed to score big.
Previously, Shaw’s tapping was classy before Lucknow returned to the game with an impressive display of bowling. Young leg spinner Ravi Bishnoi (2/22) was the best performer of the new IPL competitors.
David Warner (4 of 12), returning to the franchise where he made his IPL debut in 2009, struggled in his opening runs of the season.
Off-spinner K Gowtham (1/23) got the ball in the second and Shaw didn’t let it calm down, sending a full ball through cover for his first four innings.
Jason Holder was on the receiving end in the sequel when Shaw drew him in for a six-over mid-wicket. Then came pacer Avesh Khan, who was hit three straight fours in the fourth.
It looked like Shaw was battling on a different surface while the others were battling around him. He used his quick hands to slice the ball up and was just as quick to get it all under cover.
It was a promising power play for the Capitals, who went 52 unbeaten in six overs. However, Lucknow fought back after the power play with wickets from Shaw, Warner and Rovman Powell (3 of 10) into 18 ball space.
Shaw was caught behind Gowtham after hitting him for a straight six. Warner went down after a poor shot from Bishnoi and Powell saw his stumps bothered as he attempted the slog sweep of a wide-legged young leg spinner, leaving the Capitals in 11th with 74 for three.
The onus fell to skipper Rishabh Pant (39 of 36) to guide the team to a respectable total and he did so in the company of Sarfaraz Khan (36 of 28), who was making his first appearance for the franchise.
Pant mainly aimed for the straight borders and Sarfaraz, without taking many risks, displayed skills that won him a host of runs in domestic cricket.
