New Delhi: The scorching heatwave that swept across the nation’s capital and adjacent areas intensified on Saturday (April 9, 2022), with the maximum temperature in Delhi reaching 42.4 degrees Celsius.
Delhi temperature rises to 42.4 degrees Celsius
Delhi recorded its highest April temperature since 1950 on Saturday. India’s Meteorological Department (IMD) said it was the first time in 72 years that Delhi recorded such a high temperature in the first half of April.
Saturday’s maximum temp. was also eight degrees above the usual value for this time of year.
Additionally, the weather bureau has issued an orange alert for the state capital for Sunday and predicts severe heat waves are expected to continue in the region.
The IMD uses four color codes for weather alerts – green (no action required), amber (observe and stay informed), amber (be prepared) and red (act).
The meteorological agency also announced that the heat wave is expected to intensify further. IMD officials said a prolonged dry spell had led to “severe” weather conditions in northwest India.
The maximum temperature at the Safdarjung observatory could reach 42 degrees on Saturday, IMD said. He added cloudy conditions could provide some relief from Tuesday’s sweltering heat.
IMD added that more intense and frequent heat wave conditions are expected in North West India and adjoining parts of Central India in April.
