On Sunday June 19, staff at the government-run Rural Health Center (RHC) in Pakistan’s Sindh province reportedly severed the head of a newborn baby and left the severed head in the womb, putting the life of the woman in danger.
The woman has been identified as a 32-year-old Hindu female from the Bheel community. She was taken to a nearby hospital in Mithi, but there were no medical facilities to treat her. Her family eventually took her to Liaquat University of Medical and Health Sciences (LUMHS) in Jamshoro, where the newborn baby’s severed head was removed from the mother’s womb, saving her life.
Professor Raheel Sikander, who heads the department of gynecology at LUMHS, told the media: “Hindu woman Bheel, who belongs to a remote village in Tharparkar district, had first visited a rural health center ( RHC) from her area, but with no gynecologist available, the inexperienced staff caused her immense trauma.”
In a botched procedure on Sunday, an RHC worker cut off the unborn baby’s head and left it in the uterus, he added.
Sikandar further shared that the baby’s head was stuck inside and the mother’s uterus was ruptured and they had to surgically open her abdomen and remove the head. to save his life.
Pakistan government orders investigation after reports go viral
It was only after news of the horrific incident went viral that the Pakistani government stepped in, ordering authorities to form a medical investigation commission to investigate the tragedy and find the perpetrators.
Sindh Director General of Health Services, Dr. Juman Bahoto has ordered separate investigations into the matter.
He explained that the commissions of inquiry will investigate what happened, including the absence of a gynecologist and female staff at the RHC in Chachro.
Doctor Juman Bahoto added that the investigating committee will also look into reports that some hospital workers took photos and videos of the woman as she lay on a stretcher, fighting for her life. “Apparently some of the staff in the gynecology department took photos of her with a cell phone and shared those photos with various WhatsApp groups,” Juman added.
