Pakistan’s embattled PM Imran Khan will address the nation in a televised address today, the country’s Home Minister Sheikh Rashid Ahmed said today. Khan’s speech comes hours after he lost a majority in Pakistan’s parliament.
According to Pakistani media, PM Imran Khan will address the nation in the evening to confide in a letter regarding a “foreign plot” to overthrow the current government. Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) received another shock when the Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P), an ally of the PTI-led government, decided to join the opposition in a motion of no confidence against them to support Imran Khan.
Following this development, the government lost its majority in the lower house of Pakistan’s parliament and even in the no-confidence motion against Pakistani PM Imran Khan, which is expected to take place on April 3, Geo TV reported. Today, the Pakistani government has only 164 MPs in parliament.
The National Assembly of Pakistan has a total of 342 members with the majority being 172. The PTI-led coalition was formed with the support of 179 members, but now after the MQM-P left the party, the PTI stands at 164 members in favor and the opposition now has 177 members as supporters in the National Assembly and they do not need the support of disgruntled PTI MPs.
