United’s co-chairman Avram Glazer had purchased one of the six teams in the UAE T20 competition.
Manchester United will soon have a cricket team ready to roll in the UAE T20 league from 2023. Dubai Sports Council chairman Sheikh Mansoor Bin Mohammed confirmed the development via tweet. “I met Manchester United co-chairman Avram Glazer today and discussed opportunities to work together to further raise Dubai’s profile as a global hub for sport.
We also discussed the launch of the UAE T20 Cricket League in January 2023 with the Manchester United cricket team and other teams,” Sheikh Mansoor tweeted on Thursday evening.
United co-chairman Glazer has bought one of six teams in the UAE’s T20 league, which is due to start in January next year. Recently, the owners of United have shown a strong interest in cricket and a closed circuit franchise model without promotion or relegation is said to be one of the reasons for their interest. However, their attempt to move into a closed European Football Super League failed.
They have also failed in their bids to buy an Indian Premier League franchise, with BCCI signing two new teams this season. After that, they turned to the UAE T20 league. “I’m delighted to be part of the UAE T20 (League) when it’s inception. The UAE T20 promises to be a world-class event that will transform the growth of cricket in the Emirates,” Avram Glazers said last year.
The Glazers also own the Tampa Bay Buccaneers football team in the National Football League.
Manchester United and football have been knocked out of the Champions League after losing to Atletico Madrid earlier this week.
In the Premier League, they risk missing out on a top-four spot, currently fifth on 50 points from 29 games.
