Joe Root steps down as England captain, after the defeat against West Indies.
Joe Root immediately resigned as England’s test captain.
Root has been in that position for 5 years and has more matches (64), wins (27) and losses (26) than any other England captain. However, his team has only won one of their last 17 test matches, unable to maintain his position.
The series defeat in the Caribbean last month is England’s fourth loss in the series since they suffered 40 ashes to Australia, and their fifth in a row considering England’s unfinished series against India, which are behind by 21 points.
England have 1 win and 1 loss, their past victories. With 17 tests, it is the worst result since the 1980s.
Ashley Giles and Chris Silverwood have left the team and are in the process of appointing a new manager and manager for the men’s team.
It was expected that Root’s future would be determined as soon as this position was filled. He is a one of the best batsmen in the men’s cricket. He is at fourth position in the ICC Player Rankings for Test Batsmen with the rating of 843.
Root’s decision marks the realization of his dream of leading England to a victory over Ashes in 2017-18 and this winter, recording 40 losses on the road and 22 draws at home. His 64 test run (another record), however, was not highlighted last year with a strong home record, two away wins in Sri Lanka and one in South Africa before visiting New Zealand and India last year.
ECB Chief Executive Officer Tom Harrison said Ruth was “an outstanding role model during his tenure, balancing the requirements of a test captain while continuing to shine brilliantly with his personal acting.”
“Joe’s leadership qualities say a lot to him as a leader and as a person, leading a team through some of the most difficult and uncertain times we know and playing through a global pandemic.” Harrison added. I know that everyone who has played or worked under Joe’s will speak of his honesty and humility, his determination and example as a leader.
He was promoted to captain in 2017 after Cook’s resignation. Highlights of his tenure were a series victories at home to India in 2018 and away to South Africa in 2019-20 a series of 40 losses in Australia and home defeats to New Zealand and India last summer were his worst moments.
The claim seemed to affect some batting averages during his tenure, but he overcame that hurdle in 2021. His 1,708 goals scored last year was the most by any English player and the third in a year, all more impressive by his team-mates.
