Jignesh Mevani, an independent Member of Parliament and leading Dalit activist, was arrested by the Assam police team on Wednesday midnight from a circuit house in Palanpur in Banaskantha district of Gujarat.
His arrest in a controversial tweet was based on a complaint lodged by Arup Kumar Dey, leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party in Babanipur village west of the Assam district of Kokrajhar. The FIR was registered at the Kokrajhar police station on April 19.

Shortly after midnight arrest, Gujarat Congress posted a video on its Twitter handle showing Mr. Mevani speaking to the media while being escorted by police. “I have not been notified of the case, where it has been filed. I have not been shown any documents related to this case, ”he said.
The MLA also said his tweet was designed to promote harmony and brotherhood in the community. “My arrest is against the rules. I will fight, ”he added.
Mr. Mevani represents the Vadgam Assembly constituency.

Mr Mevani has been elected as an independent Member of Parliament for Vadgam in Gujarat. But he extended his support for Congress last year and said he would run in the by-elections later this year as a candidate.
