Three adults were among the dead, according to State Senator Roland Gutierrez, who was briefed by state police. However, it was not immediately clear whether an attacker was included in this number.
Texas Governor Greg Abbott tweeted, “Texas mourns the victims of this senseless crime and the Uvalde community. Cecilia and I mourn this horrific loss and call on all Texans to unite. I have directed @TxDPS and the Texas Rangers to work with local law enforcement to fully investigate this crime.”
The shooting occurred around 12:15 local time after a gunman, believed to be in his teens, entered the elementary school and freed fire on teachers and students, killing 21 people at the school.
This comes just 10 days after about a dozen people were shot and killed by machine gun shooters in a racistly motivated incident in Buffalo, New York, a predominantly black state. A teenager is believed to have entered a Texas elementary school armed with a pistol or rifle and opened fire inside the building. He is also accused of shooting his grandmother just before entering school. Also, very little is known about snipers.
School District Superintendent Hal Harrell said “I am heartbroken today” and announced that all school activities have been cancelled until further notice. “We are a small community and we need your prayers to overcome this.”
The gunslinger, who wore a bulletproof vest and hinted at an imminent attack on social networks, crashed his car near a school and was armed from the inside, Sgt. Texas Department of Public Safety and Security’s Eric Estrada told CNN.
Officials did not instantly disclose a purpose, but the governor recognized the attacker as Salvador Ramos and said he was a resident of a community about 85 miles (135 km) west of San Antonio.
When the shooting began, border guards working nearby broke into the school without waiting for reinforcements and opened fire on the shooter from behind a barricade, police said.
District Police Chief Pete Arredondo said the perpetrator acted alone.
It wasn’t immediately clear how many people were injured, but Arredondo said there were “multiple injuries.” Earlier, the Uvalde Memorial Hospital reported that 13 children had been transported there. Another hospital reported that a 66-year-old woman was in critical condition.
In connection with the tragic event of mourning the loss of life, US President Joe Biden has ordered the half-annual hoisting before sunset every day through May 28th. President Joe Biden is also expected to give a public address today about the school shooting.
