With CNG prices rising over the past few days and standing at Rs 69.1 per kilogram on Thursday, taxi drivers’ unions will protest at Jantar Mantar at 10am on Friday. The unions are protesting against the move, demanding that aggregators show additional costs when deciding on fares. With a sharp hike in CNG prices, auto, cab , and taxi drivers in the city have threatened to go on an “indefinite strike” from April 18 if the government does’nt provide subsidy on the fuel or decrease the fare. “we are demanding a reduction in CNG rates and if the prices cannot be slashed then the fare should be increased to cope with the price use.
Kamaljeet Gill, president of the Sarvodaya Driver Association of Delhi (SDAD) said all unions had decided to unite to protest and no cab would be operational on Friday. “
As the price of CNG goes up every day, how should drivers drive their homes when their money goes down?” he said.
There have been strikes in many other cities as well. We try to put food on the table and pay our children’s school fees, ”said Gill. He said app-based cab aggregators should catch up on prices or allow them to appear on fares. Due to rising prices, many cab drivers are reluctant to change the air conditioning of their vessels.
Prices for CNG in the national capital on Thursday increased for the second day in a row by Rs. 2.5 per kilogram, which takes the amount of increase from March to Rs 12.5 per kg.
Delhi Taxi Tourist Transporters Association president Sanjay Samrat said although Friday’s protest was against rising fuel prices, unions wanted to meet some of their demands.
Samrat said taxi unions had been demanding that the government fix fares for app-based cabs. He said the bulk of the fare charged to passengers was demanded by the collectors, which left the driver with little profit even though they worked hard. He said the government should provide taxi and autorickshaw drivers with support from CNG because they relied on fuel for their livelihood.
