BH series number plate holders do not have to register their vehicles every time they move from one state to state, which benefits professionals whose jobs have to move frequently.
The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways started vehicle registration under the new BH series (Bharat series) license plates for non-transport vehicles in September 2021. The BH series was introduced by the government to promote mobility in the country.
Under the MV Act, any vehicle owner who moves from one state to another must change the number series from the original state (from which the vehicle was purchased) to the new state where the person moved.
However, some jobs, including army personnel, among others, require central government officials to move from state to state every 2-3 years, making it cumbersome to purchase a new number each time. To prevent this, the BH series license plate was introduced, which does not require re-registration each time the owner moves to another state.
Previously, under section 47 of the Motor Vehicle Act 1988, owners were only allowed to keep their vehicle in another state (other than where they are registered) for a period of 12 months. After this period, the vehicle registration must be transferred from the original state to the new state.
The vehicle registered with a BH series does not require transfer registration each time the owner moves. The license plate remains valid throughout the country.
In addition to seamlessly transferring vehicles interstate and freeing vehicle owners from the hassle of vehicle transfer paperwork, the BH Series offers many other benefits. For example, with the new license plate, vehicle owners only have to pay vehicle tax for two years, down from 15 or 20 years (depending on the state). If one does not pay taxes after 2 years, taxes will start accumulating at Rs 100 per day.
How do I get a BH series license plate?
The process of obtaining a BH Series license plate is an online process. Vehicles can be registered by the dealer when buying online via the Vahan portal. After completing the registration process, the vehicle owner receives their BH serial number plate.
How does a BH series license plate looks?
The registration plate will be the usual one for private vehicles, with black text and a white background. However, the format of text and numbers will change. Format-YY BH #### XX BH series license plates begin with two digits indicating the year of initial registration, followed by BH representing “Bharat”. Later, the license plate has four randomly generated digits between 0000 and 9999, followed by two letters with any combination from “AA” to “ZZ”. However, the letters “I” and “O” are not used.
Are there any changes to the BH series tax structure?
In fact, the new BH series changes the tax structure. Under the new tax structure, if a vehicle is valued at less than Rs 10 lakh, owners will have to pay an 8% road tax. However, if the vehicle costs between 10 and 20 lakh, the owner will have to pay 10% road tax. If the price of the vehicle is more than twenty lakh, the owners will have to pay a road tax of twelve percent.
Taxation also differs for different vehicles considering the power source. Vehicles with diesel engines have an additional tax of two percent on their tax depending on the price categories. However, an electric motor vehicle allows the owner to save 2% tax on his vehicle.
