State media reports that UAE President Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan died at the age of 73 after years of battle with the disease.
UAE President Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed al Nahyan has passed away, the Ministry of Government Affairs said on Friday. The country will mourn for 40 days period with flags flown at half-mast as of Friday and suspend work at all public and private sector entities for three days, the ministry said.
“The Ministry of Presidential Affairs mourns to the UAE people, Arab and Islamic nations and the world the death of President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, who passed away on Friday,” the ministry said in a statement on state media without lending any more details.
According to the constitution, Dubai’s ruler, Vice president Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al-Maktoum, will act as President until the Federal Council of seven emirates is convened to elect a new president within 30 days.
Khalifa, born in 1948, has hardly appeared in public since suffering a stroke in 2014, and his half-brother, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Zayed of Abu Dhabi, known as MbZ, was the de facto ruler of the alliance. UAE, an OPEC oil-producing country.
