Deputy Superintendent of Police B Srinivasulu revealed the initial investigation said it was causing gas leaks due to alleged malfunction which led to the explosion.
HYderabad: Six people were burned to death and at least 15 were injured when a reactor exploded apparently at a gas leak in the Akkireddygudem pharmacy in the Andhra Pradesh region of Eluru on Wednesday.
Deputy Superintendent of Police B Srinivasulu released the initial investigation and suggested that the gas leak due to alleged malfunction and lead to an explosion. He added that more than 20 people were on duty at the time of the explosion at the wing of Porus Laboratories Private Limited, which manufactures specialized medical and chemical facilities.
Police, firefighters, and the National Disaster Response Force rushed to the scene at midnight to rescue and evacuate people from nearby areas due to gas leaks. “The fire was extinguished within a few hours and the situation returned to normal,” Srinivasulu said.
He said five staff members were burnt to death on the spot and another died on the way to hospital. “Some of the seriously injured workers have been relocated to Vijayawada.”
Police Superintendent Rahul Dev Sharma, who rushed to the scene, said the cause of the gas leak was found.
Andhra Pradesh Prime Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy has announced R25 lakh per person for the dead, R5 lakh each for the seriously injured, and R2 lakh each for the injured. He called on the authorities to issue an order to investigate and ensure the proper treatment of the injured.
Andhra Pradesh Governor Biswabhusan Harichandan expressed his grief over the fire and conveyed his condolences to the bereaved families.
