India Japan Economic Ties: Japan and India in 2020 signed an acquisition and cross-servicing agreement that allows for reciprocal stocks of food, fuel and other supplies between defence forces.
Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida will encourage a united approach to Ukraine while aiming to strengthen security ties in the Indo-Pacific region when he meets Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Delhi today. “As the Russian invasion of Ukraine coincides with this trip, I would like to stress the importance of international unity and confirm that Japan and India will cooperate on various issues,” Prime Minister Kishida said ahead of his visit.
India and Japan are parties to the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue (Quad), a security framework that also includes the United States and Australia. Japan has imposed sanctions on dozens of Russian individuals and organizations and has taken in Ukrainian refugees since the invasion of Ukraine that began on February 24. However, India is the only one of the four quad members who did not condemn the invasion.
Prime Minister Kishida will also aim to strengthen security and economic ties with India. During the visit, he is expected to announce a 5 trillion yen ($42 billion) investment plan in India over the next five years, Japanese newspaper Nikkei reported. Former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe announced investments and funding of 3.5 trillion yen over five years during a visit to India in 2014.
Japan has supported India’s urban infrastructure development and a high-speed rail line based on its high-speed train technology. Japan and India signed an acquisition and cross-services agreement in 2020, allowing mutual storage of food, fuel and other supplies between defense forces.
